I staked this solar bug zapper outdoor unit in the yard, gave it one full day of direct overhead sun, and by night two both sides of the 4500V grid were loaded, moths, mosquitoes, things I couldn’t name in the dark. I expected maybe one side to do the work. It wasn’t like that.
Quick Verdict
Two nights staked in the yard, one full day of rain, and the grid was already loaded with bugs on both sides. Charges in the day, runs at night. That’s the whole pitch and it held up.
Buy if you:
- want to lure bugs away from a grill, pool or back door
- have a sunny spot with direct overhead sun for the panel
- don’t want sprays, smoke or citronella smell around food
- need to stake it in dirt or hang it, depending on the spot
Skip if you:
- expect it to light the patio, the glow isn’t crazy bright
- only have shade, the panel needs real sun to fill up
- want the zapper right next to where you sit, this pulls bugs toward it

And it rained that day. Still totally fine. IPX6 on the box, but I’d rather see it survive an actual storm than read a rating.
The cool thing, too, is both sides get the bugs. I was standing there and, oh, got one, mid-sentence. It’s not a one-directional thing where half the grid does nothing.
What the money buys versus a spray can
You’re paying once instead of every few weeks for sprays, and nothing is smoking or smelling like citronella next to the food. The 4500mAh battery runs 10 to 12 hours a night, a full evening cookout doesn’t dent it, and the panel puts it back to full the next day without touching a charger.
Worth knowing: the price on this one bounces around a lot. Right now it’s sitting well under where it’s normally been over the last three months, close to the lowest MVP has tracked it. So check the live price rather than assuming.
Where it won’t do much
Shade kills solar charging: the panel needs ~8 hours of direct overhead sun to fill the 4500mAh battery. Solar charging wants about 8 hours of direct sun, and mine only filled up because it was getting sunlight straight overhead all day. If your deck is under trees, run the 13 ft cord to a sunny patch or plan on USB topping it off in 4, 5 hours.
The other thing, and this is the real gotcha: it’s a lure. You don’t want it sitting next to your chair. Push it back toward the fence line so it pulls bugs away from the grill or the back door.
And the light isn’t a patio light. It’s a nice glow, not crazy bright. It did push back there on the fence, but don’t buy this expecting to see your steak by it.
Rain, Stakes, and ABS Housing
IPX6 rating: survived one full day of rain without any flicker or shutdown. The ABS and aluminum alloy shell doesn’t feel like a throwaway, and there’s a 1 year manufacturer warranty behind it.
I only ran it two nights, so I can’t tell you about month six. What I can say is the stakes held in soft ground through weather, and the removable panel on that long cord means the one part that needs sun isn’t stuck wherever the zapper has to live. That flexibility is usually what saves these things from getting shoved in a garage.
Sales rank has slipped lately, currently #48,625 in Patio, Lawn & Garden against a 90 day average around #28,317, though Amazon still shows 100+ bought in the past month. Seasonal, most likely.
Who this is for
Anyone with a sunny yard and a bug problem near a fixed spot, a pool, a deck, a grill area, a campsite. The auto mode handles it: charges in the day, runs at night, you don’t touch it.
Shaded patio or no sun-facing ground to stake it? Stop here, the panel needs 8 hours of direct overhead sun and there’s no workaround for real shade. But if you’ve got a sunny yard and a fixed bug problem, pool edge, grill, back door, stake it 15 feet back from where you sit and let it run.

How do you clean the bug grid?
Bugs pile up on the grid, so you’ll be brushing it out periodically. It’s not dishwasher territory, it’s an electrical unit. Power it down first and clear the debris out of the tubes area so the grid keeps contact.
