I pulled the tape off the box expecting a clunky plastic brick, and instead found something that looked less like office equipment and more like something worth leaving on a desk. This is the POLONO PL80E, a bluetooth thermal printer built for 4×6 shipping labels, and I went in cold and set the whole thing up on camera. First out of the box was the user manual, then a little flash drive I couldn’t figure out at first. Good news, the USB cord was in there too, which I needed for my MacBook.

I hit print on a 4×6 label and it shot out before I finished the sentence. The POLONO PL80E is lightweight, super quiet, and rated to fire off 72 labels a minute, and the whole unbox-to-first-label run took me one calibration and one Mac driver install.

Unboxing a Bluetooth Thermal Printer I’d Never Touched Before
Then came the power cable in a zipper bag, and finally the printer itself. First thing I noticed picking it up was how light it felt, light enough that I double-checked the box for a second unit I might have missed.
What’s Actually in the Box and on the Printer
Everything the manual promised was there: printer, power adapter, power cord, USB cable, manual, sample labels, and that USB flash drive. It’s got little rubber feet on the bottom so it doesn’t slide around, a cooling fan on the back, and the USB and power connections both live back there too.
There are two buttons I found. A power button and a feed button, plus a release hatch you pull to open the cover where the label feeds out. There’s also a paper cutter built in, which I didn’t expect. The spec side is straightforward for a shipping label printer.
Setting It Up on a MacBook Over USB
The manual told me to plug in the power first, so I did that, then connected it to my MacBook. And if you know MacBooks, there’s no USB-A port on it, so I used an adapter to get the USB cable into the back of the printer. Powered on the printer, and it started calibrating the label.
Loading the labels took me a second to figure out. Since mine were the fanfold kind, I laid the stack on the other side of the printer and fed the paper through from the back, sticking out just a tad like the diagram showed. Closed the cover, held the feed button until it beeped once, and it calibrated on its own.
Then the driver. That little flash drive finally made sense, it holds both the Mac and Windows drivers along with the manual. I installed the Mac driver, gave it permission, and it said installation was successful. Then into System Preferences, Printer & Scanner, add printer, picked the thermal label printer, and chose the PL420 label printer driver. Boom, it was right there.
Watch How Fast This Label Comes Out
The label printed and ejected in under 3 seconds, fast enough that I didn’t have time to set the phone down. It’s that fast. I ran a quick PDF, an old announcement sheet from our kids’ band, peeled the label, and slapped it onto a box. Good to go.
Two things stood out beyond the speed. It’s super quiet, way quieter than I expected from something firing labels this quick. And the size is great, it doesn’t hog the desk. The only speed bump in the whole process was that page-size default. Fix that once, and every label after it takes under 3 seconds, start to finish.
The Print Settings Step You Can’t Skip
Here’s the one thing that’ll bite you if you rush. The printer defaulted to US letter size, and if you leave it there your label won’t fit on the 4×6 stock. I had to go into the printer preferences and set the page size to 4×6, and I ended up creating a custom size to be safe.
It also asked me to set printer speed and density, which I skipped, but the page size is not optional. Miss that and you’ll waste labels wondering why nothing lines up. Not a deal-breaker, just something to check before your first real print job.

Fanfold labels feed in from the back and stack outside the printer, there’s no internal slot for them, so plan for a few inches of clearance behind the unit. Rolls drop into the internal bin and disappear, which is cleaner on a tight desk. I briefly fought the fanfold loading because I tried to feed it from the front first. Don’t do that.
Advice Before You Print Your First Label
Install the driver before anything else, and grab it off the included flash drive or POLONO’s site. Calibrate with the feed button until it beeps once so the printer learns your label size. Then, and I can’t stress this enough, set your page size to 4×6 in printer preferences before you hit print. Download the shipping label from your platform as a PDF first, then print it. Do those in order and you’ll have a label on a box in under a minute.

No, Mac doesn’t support the Bluetooth connection, so you connect over USB instead. I used a USB adapter for my MacBook and it worked fine once I installed the Mac driver. Bluetooth printing through the Labelnize app is for Android and iOS 13 or above.
Do I need to download an app to use it?
Only for Bluetooth printing from a phone, where you’ll need the free Labelnize app from the App Store or Google Play. For USB printing from a computer, you just install the driver and print through your normal print dialog. No subscription or account is required either way.

Almost always the page size setting. It defaults to US letter, so you have to change it to 4×6 (or 100×150 mm) in printer preferences. Also make sure the label paper is loaded face up, or nothing prints.
Can it use both fanfold and roll labels?
Yes, it handles both fanfold stacks and rolls from 0.97″ to 4.25″ wide. Fanfold labels feed in from the back and sit outside the printer, while rolls drop into the internal bin. Just load whichever type you have the right way.
Does it support Windows and Chrome OS?
Windows 7 and up is supported, and the driver is on the included flash drive. Chrome OS is not supported. For Windows Bluetooth, you install the driver over USB first before connecting wirelessly.
