Best Above Ground Pool Vacuum for Easy Cleaning

The moment I pulled this orange Gosvor out of the box, the shape told the whole story: wide, flat, and low-profile, built to hug a vinyl pool floor, not navigate a deep end. It’s an above ground pool vacuum and nothing else, which is either exactly what you need or a dealbreaker before you read another word. (Check current price on Amazon.)

Could you drop it in an inground pool? Sure. But you better have a completely flat surface, so no depth changes, and it can’t be very big. No more than about 850 square feet on this one. Most inground pools run way bigger than that, which is exactly why this is made for those of us who own an above ground pool. Me included.

What’s Under the Orange Shell

It charges on the bottom through a little outlet, and a green light on the plug tells you when it’s ready to go. You turn it off and on with a button on the bottom, and you hear it beep. One thing I learned fast: don’t leave it on before it’s in the water or you’ll get an error. Turn it on right when you’re ready to dunk it down in there.

Flip it over and you’ll see two holes on the bottom. That’s where the leaves go in. And also whatever else is living on your pool floor. Dead bugs, hair from your kids, especially if you’ve got girls, you know that happens a lot. I’ve learned that from having girls in the pool. Plastic, anything that blew in, and sand. We get a lot of sand in ours because we run a sand filter, and it happens. All of that gets sucked up in there. There are little brushes to help scrub the floor as it moves.

How It Scoots Around the Pool

The navigation pattern is straightforward: it runs a straight line until it bumps the wall, then a small directional flap redirects it on a new heading. No random wandering, no missed strips down the middle, on a flat rectangular floor it methodically works across the surface. It won’t win points for sophistication, but it doesn’t miss corners the way a random-bounce design would.

The design is made to be hydrodynamic, and you can see it when you turn it sideways. The wheels barely poke out. They’re recessed in there hardcore. It pushes through the water really easily because there’s not a lot blocking the water to slow it down. That’s what lets it cut around the pool as quick as it can and use less battery and motor to get around. It’s also why it has a smaller motor and why it’s so stinking lightweight. Cleans for 90 minutes on a full charge.

You Still Have to Go Fish It Out

Here’s the part the box won’t emphasize. When it gets down to about 15% battery, it doesn’t come back to you. It just kind of stops up against the wall. That’s your signal to go fish it out using the hook that comes with it, which you attach to one of your poles. So it’s self-parking, sure, but self-parking means it waits at the wall for you to reach in and grab it. If you were picturing a robot that drives back to a dock, this isn’t that.

The saving grace is that big handle. This big, big handle is really nice. It makes it easy to just pick it up, and at 7.5 lbs you’re doing it one-handed. To clean it you unsnap two little spots, pull out the mesh filter that catches all the leaves, empty it, rinse it off, and pop it back on. It only goes back on facing upward, and there are little guide spots to line it up. Click clack it and it’s ready to go again.

Who This Above Ground Pool Vacuum Actually Fits

If you’ve been dragging a manual vacuum across your above ground pool every week, this is the swap that actually makes sense. Drop it in, hit the button, and it runs unattended for 90 minutes, long enough to clean a standard oval above ground pool while you’re doing something else entirely. It handles sand blowback from a sand filter, leaves, bugs, and hair without complaint.
